Leah Lewis, professional opera singer turned mom and founder of Leah’s Music Class resides in North Texas.
Leah entered the inspirational world of music and movement for the very young while studying music performance at The University of North Texas where she was first introduced to the holistic music approach known as Orff Schulwerk (a way to learn music by singing, dancing, playing special instruments and improvising).
Although she was physically removed from music education, (by her operatic career and later through travels with her husband as he served in the US Navy) her heart remained filled with dreams of sharing her love of music and its many benefits with children.
After the birth of her son, Leah turned to what she knew - the power of song, chant and rhythmic movement - to ease his colic induced discomfort. And as other challenging developmental stages emerged, Leah realized that her very active youngster responded more positively to playful redirection when music was involved.
Donning her researcher hat, Leah harvested the best of both parenting and music and movement practices, further developing her own music-and-movement-for-children philosophy.
Leah’s way of interacting with, redirecting and educating her son through music and movement caught the attention of others. When friends, colleagues, educators, and even strangers repeatedly asked Leah for pointers on how to do the same with their children, friendly musical playgroup sessions naturally blossomed into a small business.
Leah also offers Leah’s Music Class AT SCHOOL™, an early childhood music and movement program that provides educators of very young children with an exciting participatory format that instructs and enlightens as children learn through musical play. Teacher workshops and Leah’s CD’s and educational materials are available to preschool educators and home-schooling parents.
Leah is also a professional classical singer. For more info and classical singing CV, visit: www.leahsings.com
As an end note - Leah’s husband is relieved that she’s finally stopped begging him to do the hopping bunny dance, the bouncy baby song, and other such childish musical games, now that she has lots of little playmates of her very own!
